Trivalent blue plating replaces conventional hexavalent chromate with a trivalent chromium (Cr3+) passivation over the zinc deposit. The result is a clear-blue finish that is free of hexavalent chromium, meeting RoHS and ELV requirements that OEMs and export customers increasingly demand, without giving up corrosion protection. This is our recommended finish for new automotive programmes.
Why choose this finish
Cr3+ passivation supports RoHS, ELV and REACH-driven customer requirements.
Widely accepted by automotive OEMs and Tier suppliers for domestic and export programmes.
Trivalent films are less affected by heat than hexavalent chromates, holding performance after baking.
Bright silver with a clear-blue tint, consistent across the batch.

FAQ
Trivalent passivation contains no hexavalent chromium, which is the substance restricted under RoHS and the EU End-of-Life Vehicle directive. It is the standard route to a compliant zinc plated finish.
Modern trivalent blue passivations deliver comparable or better salt spray performance to traditional hexavalent blue chromates, and they hold that performance after heat exposure. For higher requirements, a lacquer or sealer top coat can be added.
TRI-BLUE is our short code for trivalent blue passivated zinc plating. It refers to the same process described on this page.
